If you've ever wondered what it takes to rebuild a Clash-style base builder from scratch for the web, Crown & Clan is worth a look. Created by Teo Zeng with Phaser and TypeScript, it's a playable village builder that anyone can play, study, and help shape.
What Is Crown & Clan?
Crown & Clan follows the core loop that made the genre famous: build up your village, train troops, and send them to raid campaign bases. It runs directly in the browser, with no download and no account required. The current build includes:
- Village building and upgrades across multiple structure types
- Troop training and raids against campaign bases
- Research to strengthen your army over time
- Spells and hero equipment that add tactical depth to each attack
- Battle replays to review exactly how a raid played out
Why Game Developers Should Look at the Code
Base builders look simple, but they bundle many systems together: building placement on a grid, troop pathfinding and targeting, upgrade and research progression, combat resolution, and replays that must reproduce a battle faithfully. Seeing them implemented with Phaser and TypeScript makes Crown & Clan a useful reference for anyone working on strategy games.
Because the project is open source, you don't have to guess how anything works. Clone the repository, run it locally, and dig in.
How to Contribute on GitHub
Teo is actively looking for feedback and contributors. Issues and pull requests are welcome on GitHub, and two areas stand out.
Mobile controls. Translating precise building placement and troop deployment onto touch screens is one of the genre's hardest UX problems. Experience with touch input, gestures, or camera controls in Phaser would have a big impact.
Game balance. Troop stats, costs, upgrade timings, and spell strength all need tuning. Playtesting notes and data-backed balance proposals are as valuable as code, and even a well-documented bug report moves the project forward.
Crown & Clan currently uses assets from Supercell's games as placeholder art during development. It's an unofficial fan project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Supercell in any way.
