Dark Cone is a browser-based survival horror game built with Phaser by Faraz The Web Guy. Created as a game jam prototype for the theme "Strange Places", it is available free on itch.io with no download required.

How to Play Dark Cone

You are trapped inside a maze-like facility with one hostile entity and a flashlight with a limited battery. The core mechanic is simple but effective: the creature only moves when it is not in your light. Hold the left mouse button to activate the flashlight and freeze it in place. Let the battery drain, and it starts hunting again.

The twist is that the battery does not recharge while the light is on. It recharges in darkness. So survival depends on managing when to look and when to stay blind, balancing the risk of running out of light against the danger of giving the entity room to move.

The objective is straightforward: find the key, reach the exit, and do not get caught. Two outcomes are possible. You escaped, with your time in the maze recorded, or you were caught, with the entity reaching you in the dark.

Dark Cone Features

For a game jam prototype, Dark Cone packs a focused set of features:

  • Flashlight freeze mechanic that creates a tension loop, easy to understand but hard to master
  • Battery management that forces you to choose between safety and visibility
  • Sound-driven tension that adds atmosphere without relying on visual complexity
  • Top-down perspective that keeps gameplay readable while darkness does the rest
  • Key and locked exit progression as the single clear objective

The game was built entirely without generative AI, as stated by the author, and runs directly in the browser using Phaser.

Who Should Play Dark Cone

Dark Cone is a short experience aimed at players who enjoy atmospheric survival games and browser-based indie horror. It is not a long game, but it delivers a coherent concept with a clear tension loop.
